This year marks the 100th anniversary of Hoana, the beautifully preserved century-old yacht once owned by sailing legend Harry West. To commemorate this milestone, the Australian Maritime Museum is hosting a two-week exhibition and maritime rally, showcasing approximately 20 vessels aged 100 years or older. Featured vessels included Hoana (1925), Jenny Wren (1889), and thirteen additional yachts of notable vintage.
On Sunday, October 12, a historic water rally culminated with a ceremonial cannon firing from the iconic Tall Ship James Craig at Athol Bay. The event offered a striking blend of spectacle, heritage, and authentic maritime tradition.

As a company deeply rooted in Australia’s maritime heritage, Harry West Flags was honoured to see Hoana—a vessel intrinsically linked to its own story—recognised in such a significant way. The rally was personally attended by Managing Director and owner Mia Park, representing the company’s ongoing commitment to preserving and celebrating maritime legacy.
Hoana: A Storied Past
Built in 1925
Hoana was constructed by James Hayes & Sons in 1925 for Lex Buckle, to sail with the Sydney Amateur Sailing Club (SASC). It is a 9.14 m (30 ft) centreboard sloop, planked in New Zealand kauri on spotted gum frames. (arhv.sea.museum)
Trials, Restoration, and Racing Success
In 1926, Hoana was grounded in a storm and suffered severe damage. Hayes rebuilt her, and she was relaunched in 1927. Over the decades, ownership shifted, and Hoana earned many accolades under various skippers. One of the notable owners, Harry West, restored Hoana to its gaff rig setup, and the vessel continued competing in SASC events.
Legacy and Significance
Hoana is one of only a few surviving Sydney Harbour auxiliary coach-house cruisers from the 1920s. Her configuration—gaff rig, centreboard, original hull and deck—makes her an exceptional piece of maritime heritage.
